I have a 1987 2.7 litre OMC Sea Drive. Oil injection is disconnected & I want to replace pump. am having trouble finding someone who can tell me what pump to buy. also, are there any modifications needed to do this? Any help would be great.

Re: replace vro with standard fuel pump

you have 2 choices.

Vro Replacement Fuel Pump Kit "no Oil"
(for Using Oil/gas Pre-mix In Fuel Tank)

#5007422 it is in the $300 range.

$100 range on larger motor you may have to use 2 of these.
Part Number: 0385784
Description: FUEL PUMP AY

looks like the expensive pump may be the "easy" way out.I was expecting around $150.00 for pump with out oil injection. The other option looks like it could get complicated. if it were you what would you do?

Why do you want to replace the pump? If the gasoline part of the pump is working fine, just plug the oil intake line (put a small piece of correct hose, properly clamped, on the inlet, and plug the other end with a bolt or similar, again properly clamped), disconnect the alarm wires from both the tank and the pump, and you're done. The pump will work fine w/o oil.

If the gasoline part is suspect, I believe you can get a rebuild kit for that part alone. Maybe someone else can advise further.

Have been eliminating possible problems. At approx. 4000 rpm motor cuts back to idle or stalls. fuel filter on side of engine is nearly running dry. line from tank to motor seems to flow fine. didn't know you could rebuild fuel side alone. is there any potential problems in the future by not removing disabled vro? Thanks for info all.

I've heard you can pinpoint whether it's a pump problem by pumping the bulb while the engine is running to see if it helps. I've never personally encountered this problem so I can't speak from experience.

People run VRO/OMS pumps all the time with the alarms disconnected and the oil inlet plugged. It's a standard and acceptable way to run them. It is critical to properly plug the oil inlet though, so that air doesn't get into the system there. I think the best way is to snip the oil hose a couple of inches from the pump and plug the end. Make sure all connections/clamps are air tight. I'm doing it right now.

You might search on info on the rebuild, or start a thread with that specific topic. From what I've read, it sounds like an easy DIY if it is available for your pump. You might have to identify your pump - this might help: http://www.continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/VRO.html

Re: replace vro with standard fuel pump

thanks d.boat. i have part #s for existing fuel pump so i will look for a rebuild kit. two sqeezes on sqeeze ball will fill fuel filter although i have not tried it while running. will give that a shot. will check oil line plug to make sure it is air tight. was told about pulse limiter hose to check. am i checking for a vacuum leak or fuel leak or possible blockage?
