Replaced Impeller but still very little flow

After what I believe was an impeller failure on my Volvo Penta 130 (on a 2005 Stingray 185), I replaced the impeller as instructed. Engine was still overheating so I pulled the hose to the thermostat housing and very little flow was coming from the impeller outlet. If I lowered the hose outlet the flow increased significantly. (This was all done with a water hose connected to the attached near the engine).

Any next suggestions. I would assume that I should have see very large amount of flow from the impeller discharge (correct?).

Did the have the water turned on enough? I know you don't want to crank it either, but I have found my temp starts to creep up idling on the muffs. I tried dropping the drive into a large rubbermaid tub, fill it up and leave the water running enough to keep fresh cool water coming in and it seems to work better. You could have bits of impeller clogging up flow, was your impeller missing rubber? Also, your timing could possibly be off, that was a problem I once had. New impeller, new water pump, manifolds and risers, all new water hoses, therostat, the works! Temp still kept going up so I checked timing and it was way off, set it to correct spec, and now runs cool as a cucumber.

I suspect you actually mean a 3.0L, and it would sure help to know the full model number. There was an AQ130, but that was back in the 70's.

If you do have plenty of water volume and pressure on muffs, I would check the water intake section of the system between the drive and the pump. Air leaks are your enemy with engine mounted pumps, or if you have power steering, the PS cooler could be plugged up.

PS, even if you have a lot of water pressure at your tap, if you have 75 or 100 feet of garden hose, you will have a problem. Put it in the water to test.

Thanks for the suggestions. It is a 2005 Stingray with a volvo 3.0 liter. I will be going to the lake tomorrow, so I will try it again in the water.
