I have a 1987 GT150 ( Picture attached)

Got the boat free

Friend told me a mechanic changed the part In the picture and and now it wont go but 20 MPH and barely gets on plane.

Before it ran good, just had a miss in it from time to time.

Is this the Rectifier/Regulator? ( Red arrow pointing to part replaced) In picture.

Would that be causing no power in the water? and is there any test I can do?

Thanks Mike

The engine will run fine with rect/reg disconnected so its not the problem.

You are not running on all cylinders, test for spark on ea plug wire,
a timing light is a quick way.
Check to make sure plugs are correct and gapped properly,

I'd go through the engine from top to bottom and do a full service on it, thats a good engine, you could destroy it by not knowing what it needs.
Rebuild carbs, change water pump, change lower gear oil to start.
Make sure the warning horn sounds when you turn the ignition on, too many engines burn uo because some idiot disconnected the warning system.
Unplug the heat sensor on the head, ground it to the block, horn should sound.

Theres lots more I'd do before running it. Treat it right, it'll last for yrs.

and get the factory manual so we don't have to type it all out for you.:D

www.outboardbooks.com
worth its weight in 2 stroke oil.

The arrow in your picture points to the power pack. Maybe the mechanic hooked it up wrong? Does the part number match your 150 is spec'd for?
Definitely check the pugs and wires, clean coil grounds and inspect/test coils. While you have stuff apart do the Joe Reeves timing gig for your wot setting. It sould fire up, if not have fun with those carbs :) What's cool is you can do the servicing while bait fishing and having a cold one. Cheers

Re: Replaced Rectifier/Regulator engine has no power under load

I got 4 different people saying it ....

Its a power pack and 2 saying its the Rectifier/Regulator

I guy on marineengines.com said it was the powerpack!

wich is it?? lol ( Thought the plastic box in the back of the motor between the plugs was the powerpack.

The diagram I have shows its Rectifier/Regulator in my picture.

Also replaced the fuel solenoid flag, gasket and o ring it was leaking gas... seems to start up easy now. Could that be causing it to run rough under load?

Thanks Mike

Power pack will have wires running to each coil. I believe your rectifier is mounted under the flywheel and is liquid cooled.

Looks like you have two packs on that motor one on each side. If it is running rich due to the solenoid being stuck open it will also have no power.

according to BRP diagram site you have 2 power packs, one on each side. they are not that big or shaped like that. they picture is not clear, or large enough to make thing out for sure.

Ok,if that is the power pack there is only one on this engine.

The one in the picture.

Does anyone know for sure what that is?
I attached another picture

Thanks Mike

No wonder you got all the wrong answers. I think you will find the regulator/rectifier on top of the cylinder block, right to the rear of the flywheel.

The power pack certainly can be the cause of loss of power. But there are other possibilities also. I'm not savvy on that motor, but does it have S.L.O.W.? That is a system that partially shuts it down if overheated, for instance.
