My alternator seems to have stopped charging. Most likely my fault as I overtightened it and it stopped spining for a bit but it has been flaky for a while now (based on the voltmeter).

What is involved in switching to a single wire design and does anyone know the Napa part number?

I've got a 1975 120hp OMC Stringer (that is giving me no end of trouble).

Re: Replacement Alternator

Napa probably doesn't have a marine style alternator. The difference is that a marine alternator is sealed from the atmosphere, so that any sparks it may create, such as the brushes on the rotor will not ignite any gasoline fumes (the ones that you run your blower for) that may be lurking in your bilge.

Scott.

Re: Replacement Alternator

you need to find the make and numbers of the alternator on the housing, it's on there somewhere. you can search the web, 100s of sellers will come up.

Re: Replacement Alternator

Got the info I need. Thanks. Local re-wind shop sells them for $160. That's a lot less then the $450 the marine shop quoted me (they are the one who told me to try the re-wind shop).

If you have an old prestolite alternator, I'm told this swap is the way to go. You end up with a standrard Delco alternator with the spark arrestor screens and one wire to the battery. Far more reliable and far cheaper to replace. Next time it goes, it's a quick $50 trip to Canadian Tire for a cheap GM alternator, swap backs and your ready to go.
