Hello people,
my mercruisers are getting a bit old now 1988, and petrol over here is now horrendously expensive. Can anyone give me advice on a good replacement diesel. i'm happy to go for lower RPM just for cruising really.
Cheers Bob

the cummins/mercruiser 1.7 package (engine and drive) is a direct replacement will decrease your fuel consumption notably and is a great cruising engine.
some minor tank and boat adjustments may be required.

I don't know haw many of them made it to your side of the Atlantic, but in the mid 80's GM had a 4.3 diesel. They only put out 105hp (no turbo) but were pretty torquey. Over here people will almost pay you to take them and they are fairly cheap to rebuild.

Ok, scratch the 4.3 diesel, it was an Olds block and would take way too much effort to make it work. You would be better off looking at the 6.2 and 6.5L engines. Thier mounts, bellhousing etc. are identical to the chevy V8's. They should weigh about 200lbs. more than you V6.
