Three years ago I had a replacement 4.3L dropped in to my '91 Rinker. (Through various levels of stupidity, the original block froze & cracked...)

Turns out I got TAKEN! Replacement engine NEVER ran RIGHT and blew #1 piston apart, took out block and head on that side (this was weeks back, when I first put it in). FYI: Anyone in northcentral Wisconsin, feel free to contact me, I will give you specifics on the dealer that &*@^#*&$(^ me.

Just to top it off, this particular boat no longer fits our needs. So...

How do I replace the engine w/o spending more than the boat is worth. Before the engine blew I was told $4,500 - $5000 on trade (now down to $1500) Can used long blocks be found? Can replacing the engine be a "backyard mechanic" job? Note: I've restored a '56 MG complete w/ engine rebuild... and it still runs;)

Or is there any way to sell off the hull? Local dealer quotes me about $4,500 for a new Mercury long block installed.

Re: Replacement Engine

Get a junk yard 4.3 truck engine 87 or newer. If you are going to keep it for yourself change the freeze plugs to brass. Switch camshaft if yours did not get damaged. They are roller cams so they are expensive. Marine water pumps are special, use yours off of your engine.
