As I continue working on this '74 Skipjack, I am gathering information on possible parts that I will want and need. While on my quest, I see there are a few After Market sources. Bomadier, Sierra, GLM and of coarse Original OMC. I suspect there are more, but these are the ones I see the most. Are there some of these I should stay away from or are they all going to be about the same. Will it depend on the what part I am looking for? All comments are welcome. At the moment I am searching around for a Transom Boot. I have seen GLM ranging from $60-$75, Sierra $75-$85 and spotted some OMC for $110-$125. OEM Part # 313080.

as you probably already know, Bombadier, is no longer supporting OMC. most of what you find is new/oldstock, and going to be expensive. it may be the last one the have.

as stated,.......

If you can find The part you're looking For,......
Quality Isn't really an Issue,....

OMC has been Out of Business for Years,+ Bombardier bought the Name,+ Doesn't Support the Old Drives.....

You'll want to get used to seeing NLA in your Search for Parts...........

I constantly use Bombadier for their Sterndrive Diagrams and part numbers. I had used them along with guidance from members of this forum to determine that my 74 Drive was actually a 75-76.

We no longer service theses drives, but Sierra seems to make alot of parts for them, and are available on this site.

I'd pull the drive, inspect the drive shaft splines and do a water pump.Note that if the splines are bad,and you can't find new shafts ....... you don't want to spend much on any of this drive system.

Re: Replacement Parts for OMC Drive

The Sterndrive runs quite well. Between the time I first looked at the boat and when I took it out on Sea Trials, the owner ran it up and down the coast for 3-4 hours. On the Sea Trial it was run for an additional 1 1/2 hours. At this time, I have no reason to believe there is anything wrong with the drive except it is in need of maintenance and corrosion control. The lower unit was replaced prior to Sea Trials because it would not shift into gear. As I break done the drive into assemblies, the Water Pump is one of the items I have already noted for replacement just because.

The biggest players in parts seems to be Sierra and GLM. Has anyone had an issue in regard to quality of the parts between these two After Market Suppliers?

Hi tashasdaddy,

I use Bombadier mostly for part # research. They have been invaluable for that.

Hi DHPMARINE,

Drive is already pulled. I am in the process of breaking it down into major assemblies. The water pump is one of those items I am replacing/rebuilding. Right now I am trying to remove a very stuborn Exhaust Cover with 2 of the 5 bolts frozen solid and a third that had been snapped off prior to me buying the boat.

Hi Bond-o,

I have found quite a number of resources all the way from individual used parts on E-Bay to complete used drives on Craig's List. The stuff is out there. No doubt, the Internet has been a fantastic resource. I even get to correspond with great people like yourself, HeHeHe

Lyndy,

GLM is a great source for OMC drive parts.
EBasicpower dot com has a good inventory of GLM parts.

First casualty of the corosion on the outdrive. Two of five bolts holding the Exhuast Cover to the Exhaust Casing had to be drilled out. Good thing I found a replacement Cover last week on Ebay for $1. Still have the studs remaining in the Exhaust Casing and they will not budge, but I believe heating the Exhaust Casing up a bit will allow me to remove them. Now on to the Upper Gearcase which should come out pretty easy now and then remove the Exhaust Casing. The adventure continues and I am one step closer to painting this Antique.

Use plenty of PB Blaster along with the heat. You only have to heat the surrounding area short of burning the paint. Be sure to rock the stud/broken bolt back and forth, applying more PB Blaster along the way.

If you'da done this when attempting to remove the bolts in the first place, you probably would not have snapped them.

Hi Boomyal. You may be right about the bolts. In my own defense, it took little to no pressure to snap those two bolts and it looks like whoever tried to take this cover off before me had the same problem with one of the remaining 3. BUT! I do thank you for the advice on rocking the bolt back and forth while heating the surface. I still have plenty of PB Blaster left from my 4 previous attempts of removing the cover before I destroyed it. Don't foresee any problems in removing the 2 bolt studs from the Exhaust Housing, but the third one only has about 1/4" of thread left. Do not know if there is enough of it left. I am thinking that a screw extractor may be the only way. I will post a picture of it before I make an attempt at that one.
