Replacement Parts -- Stators & Recifiers

I am replacing a stator on my '83 150 and I see there are some options as far as replacement parts. Does anyone have any recommendations on whether I should go with CDI, Mallory, Sierra, or Quicksilver and the pros and cons of any of these?

Also I'll be replacing the rectifiers on both engines on the boat. I've seen some posts that talk about using a rectifier from radio shack. While the RS product may be cheaper is it one of those you get what you pay for type of things? I don't mind paying more for one of the aftermarket parts that I'll be able to bolt on and connect right out of the box rather then fabricate a bracket for the RS rectifier. So again any experience with the options available for rectifiers?

CDI has the best product.

Go with the CDI products for ignition components. The RS rectifier should bolt on with a single bolt, no extra bracket is necessary. You will need to change the ring terminals on the rectifier wires to spade terminals, to use the RS rectifier. If you are too lazy to do that, spend the extra $50 for the inferior OEM rectifier.

I soldered 14 gauge solid wire loops to the terminals on mine, and use stainless machine screws to hook up the stock wires.

What are the specs I need to have for the RS rectifier? I just looked and there a bunch of Amperage/voltage combos, I'm not finding specs for the OEM one in my manual.

We have never had a bad stator from CDI but remember if you alter it in anyway it could void the warrenty so I wouldn't solder the ends to the wires.

The RS rectifier is a 25Amp model (if memory serves) with a hole in the center and four spade connectors. Any 12+Amp rectifier will do the job as well, however that 25A model has proven itself indestructable.

John, I installed a $3.00 RS Bridge rectifier in im '77 Merc 1500 in 1981. The motor has been submerged in salt water twice since then and it still works! I do not consider that to be a marginal product.

The point is, Radio shack can sell a 200 volt rectifier as a 50 volt, but is not bound to it. You have obviously received an adequate part, but if it was right at the minimum advertized specification, it would be marginal.

If it failed shorting at least 2 junctions, it would take out a high buck stator, so why gamble?

It's the design parameters that are marginal, and the product could be also. In 1981, the specs might have been higher. In fact, they likely were. There were still Flemming valves (vacuum tubes) in service back then.

They're sealed units. Salt water wouldn't hurt them until it rotted the terminals totally off.

hope it helps

my boat mechanic uses CDI, but I recently installed one from sierra for my 84 150.
