I've come to the conclusion my 89 90HP Evinrude crossflow needs a new power pack. The OMC PN# is 584028. My question is what brand power pack(OMC, CDI, Sierra, etc.) is the best replacement as for quality and life expectancy is concerned? Are there any improvements in part design with somebody different than OMC? Thanks once again to all of you for help and guidance concerning my ignition problems!

Re: Replacement Power Pack Brand

While I am not sure if this is true of an '89 model, the powerpacks that BRP sells for older OMC engines, are generally aftermarket parts anyway. I have a Sierra powerpack in my 1972 Johnson 65hp motor, as well as a CDI timer base. Both have worked flawlessly for the last couple of years.

You should find the factory replacement packs from Bombardier will work just fine. I do know that all crossflow replacement packs from Bombardier are rev limit set at 5800. If you are a performance boater and this limit is a problem, then look for an aftermarket supplier that can provide an unlimited power pack.

CDI/Rapair now makes ALL the replacement electrical for BRP(1998 and back) so if you order a OEM pack from dealer you get a CDI pack in BRP box with BRP price. Serria also makes a good pack and it has a lifetime warranty!!

I guess CDI it is then. I like the option of having no limiter if for some reason I decide to "hop" her up in the future. Thanks again for the advice everybody! I appreciate all very much:cool::D:cool:

I prefer CDI too, but couldn't find one for my engine. I would also go with aftermarket if possible, because the BRP prices are nothing short of absurd.

BTW, if you want a pack that is not rev limited, be sure of what you are buying. I believe some of the aftermarket packs do include rev limiting.

I've been running a Sierra powerpack on my '85hp crossflow for the last five seasons. It has worked flawlessly. From my perspective, it I'd say Sierra makes a pretty good "knock-off".
