Replacing 140 with 165 and outdrive

guys, I have a queation about outdrives. I have swapped out my 140 4 cylinder cracked block :( with a junkyard bought formula 1 that had a 165 6 cylinder, Cracked manifold of course. :( The boat had a outdrive already removed and laying in the boat. Gear lash is better than my 140 and since I understand they have different gearing I figured it would be the wise choice to use it since I have upgraded to a 6 cylinder. Well here is the question. The input drive shaft is stamped 188. I am assuming this is for the 8 cylinder motors. The revolution for my 140 was a 2 to 1 ratio. One of the input shaft gave me 1/2 turn on the prop. The 188 is giving me 1 to 3/4 ratio. 1 turn on the input and 3/4 turn on the prop. This will tranlate into more RPM on the prop which might not be bad since my prop was a 17" pitch prop. Any thoughts form you guys on if this will be okay with the 6 cylinder? Do you think I will be close on props or just need to change props?

I split the unit and put a new pump in it. It didn't really need it once I got in to it. Oil was very clean. The unit shifts very good and feels tight. "in repsect to lash"

Yep looks like mine. How well does it run for you. Mine is a chapparal 18 1/2 ' 1973 I have worked hard on this one. I need to do some more clean up after all the work I have been doing. I have to make a new cowling for mine since I went from a 4 to a 6 cylinder.

I had a friend with one years ago and I remember it running great. How does yours do?

My 165 still runs great. It has a 21 pitch prop and can hit 36mph WOT on a smooth lake. I can still get up on skis behind the boat, and at a tad over 200lbs, it can haul me right up out of the water. :)

Butch A.
