Hello everyone,
My first time posting here after lurking around for a few years. I'm looking for some advice on replacing my idler axle on my trailer.
The trailer is a V/M custom trailer built for my 1983 19' Cobalt boat. It's a tandem axle trailer and the forward axle has the surge brakes attached, so the aft axle is the idler axle. Both axles are 2"x2" square tube with a 4" drop on the spindles.
A couple years ago I was trailering the boat on the highway when I hit a large object which appears to have bent the right spindle on the aft axle, causing my tire to wear unevenly. I am want to replace the axle but the manufacture wants to build a new one for around $500, and I don't want to spend that much. I've managed to find a place that has the exact length I need but it is round tube instead of square, for about $200 out the door. I've given it a lot of thought but I can't see where it would matter if one of the axles is round and the other square, other than the odd appearance that it would create. The spring seats come loose so I would just have them welded to the same location as my existing.
Anybody have any input on this situation, or know if there would be any unforeseen issues with this setup?
Thanks...Randy
