Is it simple to replace a broken stud on a trailer hub on your own, or do i need to have a wheel shop do it? I have basic power tools and can borrow more powerful tools if necessary. I have already taken it to the wheel shop, but they require that the boat not be on the trailer and that they keep the trailer for a couple days. Unfortunately, I don't have anywhere to keep the boat at a secure location that someone wont be able to just take it. I boat at rural lakes for the most part and use public ramps/docks.

how about buying a new hub assembly? might be cheaper, depending on the trailer

No its not hard..unless its rusty..then its MAPP gas time...pull the wheel, remove the rear hub assembly and pound the stud out front to rear..replace.

A new hub will run you $40 or less including new bearings, etc.

No surprises. Just jack it up, install new hub, and your done.

Just like marine4003 said, its easy. Take the hub off, oil the stud really good, get a hammer and pound it out the back of the hub. You can get a special tool to press the stud out but you don't need it. Then put the new stud in, put the nut on it and tighten it to pull it through.
