Need alittle help from the vast amount of knowledge on these forum boards..... :D

I'm looking at a beautiful 1984 Tiara 31' open. The problem is that it has a blown port side motor in need of replacment. Bad compression.

My exp. is in outboards.

Whats involved in replacing one or both of these motors?

Are these motors intended to be rebuilt or replaced? Pro's con's

If replaced, what brand engine? Approx. cost? Where and who?

The boat is located in Florida. Can anyone recommend a repair shop. I live in CT, so either here or there.

Any and all help will be appreciated..

D.J.

It's not going to be easy to get a price from the folks on this board because you haven't explained what you have for engines and outdrives yet...

They'll need more info.

(I'm their message monitor, so when they're busy I have to jump in here and answer for them.) :)

Well, I don't know what engines you have, but they are probably based on a GM or Ford block, which can take many many rebuilds. A new one could cost anywhere from $1-4000, depending on what engine and whether you need the whole engine or just a short block. Whatever the case, it will probably be a hell of alot cheaper to fix or replace than an outboard. :)

The engine in a 31 Open is going to be 454 Crusader or Mercruiser. Both are GM blocks that many Engine Remanufacturers sell. Just do a search on the web for "Engine Remanufacurer" or Crusader etc. A blown engine doesn't describe the condition of the engine. It could be rebuilt and reinstalled. How many hours on the engines? As for who can do the work for you....I would pass on having it done in Florida if you will be using it in CT. Just a find a Marina or shop that you feel comfortable with. I have a 31 Open with 1275 hours on the Crusaders and still running strong.
