I have an older 21' Steigercraft with an AQ151. It needs to be replaced but I am wondering what my options are. I do not want a rebuilt Volvo engine. Is it possible to mate it to a Chevy 4.3? or do I need to rework the transom and just get a complete setup? Thanks, Shawn

The 4.3 won't mate up to our outdrive for many reasons. So, yes a completely different drivetrain would be the way to go. While you may be able to piece it together with used parts it will be a long hard job.

Depending on how much the boat means to you, replacing the transom and drivetrain will most likely cost you more than the boat is worth.

IMO, the Volvo four cylinder motors of that era are good motors, and if the rest of the drivetrain is still solid, I would consider the rebuild.

Let us know what you decide. Good luck!

I've thought about getting a rebuilt but since they are short blocks, I would still have issues with the dual solex carbs, a distributor that has a hairline crack (and is very expensive to replace if you can find one) and a water pick up tube that is rotted. the 190hp of a 4.3 would be nice as well, the 151 only had a top end of 20-22 kts. I would do the fiberglass and installation myself so I would save that expense.
thanks for your response, it looks like I will be scouting for a used merc this week!
