Replacing bellows, water pump and what else?

Winterized the motor and have pulled the outdrive. I know I have a serious hole in one of the bellows as I got 6 inches of water in the boat last time out (need an auto bilge pump too). So planning my winter project. Been watching you-tube and think I have it sorted.

What I think I need is:
Tools:
Hinge pin tool ($10 on Amazon.com, $90 on Amazon.ca) 91-78310 or equivalent
Alignment tool91-805475A1 or equiv.
Flexible shaft with 1/4 in socket
Do I need a bellows install tool?

Parts:
Full bellows kit including the gimble bearing. I'm thinking this kit http://www.iboats.com/Mercury-Marine-30-803098T1-replacement-parts/dm/view_id.464875 or similar.
Water pump kit.

Now (and I will figure out how to put up a picture) the u-joints on the drive shaft look rusty to me. Can they be serviced, or what would be the replacement part #'s?

Plan is to fix it right and end up with the tools to do it again.

Make sure you use bellows adhesive. Since you are going in that far you might as well replace the lower shift cable. It is a standard replacement item.

Does iboats sell the OEM Mercruiser bellows? I just saw replacement parts.

And the tool?

This is going to be a winter project so I probably won't pick up parts for a month or so. Hoping the Cdn dollar improves some more first.

You don't need to buy the Hinge pin tool if you have a 1/2" allan wrench.

Also, if you use an Exhaust Tube instead of an Exhaust Bellow you won't need the special tool.
Although the tube is a bit louder.

Have to check if it is a bellows on the exhaust. Is there a good source for OEM parts?

There are several, I google the part number and it comes back with several. Many have been bought from ebay for less (online dealers)

When it comes to OEM, I've been buying from Performance Product Technologies. The guys that answer the phone if you have a question are superb. Had them save a vacation, mid vacation for me, shipping parts overnight. Once you find your model it is easy to find original part numbers from any of the online dealers. Just been my happy experience so far using PPT.

A note, I support iboats with my dollars. I have an order in transit now for a bunch of supplies for my motor upgrade project. What iboats offers, I tend to buy from them. So my OEM purchase recommendation is not a dis-recommendation for supporting this site!

Here's a different thought (that completely contradicts my first post). Is there a cheaper way to replace the bellows that (maybe) doesn't involve buying all the tools and buying cheaper parts?

This boat has been a PITFA from the day I bought it and I am seriously considering a less long-term ownership plan. I don't want to slap it together with junk, but I am trying to decide if I want to sell it in the spring. Aside from a welded hull, it is not really the boat I want for fishing and I am really frustrated with it to the point that I think it might be healthier to let it go to someone who will like it. There is more to the story of the boat than I am willing to share, but it both has sad memories and it pisses me off everytime I try to do something to it.

You don't need the exhaust tube, if it has a tear no biggy. Buy Sierra parts from iboats

Pull the outdrive off, inspect everything. Spin the gimbal, make sure it will pass go for a new buyer. Replace the ujoint bellows if it needs it. There are other ways to get water in the ujoint bellows than torn rubber bellow. SO check everything out and let us know what you find. We'll help you figure out how to get it running.

I appreciate that. Just know this will be a long-term project for me as I have put it away for the winter and have a bathroom to fix.

I'm back.

I'm going to keep the boat, at least for a few years. But it will not see a lot of use so I'm trying to keep the repairs cost down, but not have to dig into it again. Plus, I made some comment about hoping the Cdn $ improves and that isn't happening.

At this point, we have more snow than usual this year so I'm putting this off until around Easter, but want to get parts ordered.

I'm going to do the kit, including the shift cable and gimble bearing. May do the u-joint as well.

I'm confused on which kit I need. Am I looking for one to replace MERCURY MARINE 30-803098T1 or to replace OEM 30-803097T1? Seems the year's are different on different sites and I can't find a good link to the actual OEM part. If I have to find the serial #, is it on the outdrive as well as the block? Outdrive is easy to get to as it is in the garage. The block is in the boat and there is 3 inches of snow on the cover.

It's a1980 165 HP inline 6.

Thanks for any help.

Get an OEM Mercruiser/Quicksilver lower shift cable for sure, they are built different than after market cables and well worth the extra cost.

I have used after market bellows and didn't have issues with them, but see the merit of using OEM if you want to spend the extra money for a better product
