Hi everyone,

Going to replace the bendix (starter drive gear) on my 1989 Johnson 70 in the next few days.

Do I need an impact to take the nut off or should I use a wrench with a clamp on the shaft? Just want to clear that up before I head out to the storage unit.

Use a 13/16 wrench on the bottom of the drive gear hex to hold it in place. Use a 11/16 wrench to remove the the top retainning nut from the starter shaft. The spring is not under that much compression.

Thanks!

Glad I don't need to haul the air compressor out.
