Replacing Bimbal Bearing

OMC Cobra SX '94
While checking the gimbal bearing I noticed a circular spring type of seal behind the bearing that was sticking out. Is that part of the gimbal bearing or some type of seal?

I figure at this point I will replace the bearing but I am wondering about this spring type thing.

It is a seal and not critical. I wouldn't bother replacing it.

And why are you bumping your thread after only 2 hours?

I am trying to get my tub into the water this weekend and to get the parts in time I have to order them by this afternoon.

Was that seal a carry over from the OMC to Volvo transition?
It looks like the gimbal bearing performs the same task as a seal.
