So, I cut the cap to get to the transom. I have completed my transom restore and bonded the splashwell to the transom. I am attempting to fasten the cap to the hull. It was originally stapled. I have tried a stapler with 100 PSI and they will not penetrate the fiberglass. I have the rubber rail and metal trim piece which I will rivet in place once the top and bottom are secure.

I am looking for suggestions on what is the best way to fasten the cap to the hull?

Thanks in advance for your expertise.

I'd rivet it.

Yep, I Agree^^^but I would use some 3M Marine silicone between the two first as well as the clamps you're already using and let it cure for 24-48 hrs.

Thank you for the advice. Just to make sure I am clear on the location of the rivets.... You are talking about riveting the metal trim to the top and bottom of the boat just like it was from the factory and using the silicone to waterproof and aid in the adhesion. NOT riveting the fiberglass flange. I would think that rivets would weaken the fiberglass lip.

My cap and hull were riveted together from the factory then the aluminum rub rail was rivetd on over the rivets holding the hull and cap thus making it double riveted. All with blind rivets. And who says fiberglass boats don't have rivets? Mine had 200+ rivets between the rub rail and the cap and hull seam.

Nope, We mean Rivet the Fiberglass Edges Just like the staples held them together.
