Replacing bunks, minus brackets?

The trailer under my 19' Bayliner cuddy is awful. It came with the boat, everything is in good shape (it's an all-galvanized Magic Tilt), but the system for mounting bunks is just cheesy.

This trailer has two 2x4 bunks, each 9ft long, and no rollers. The bunks are basically "strapped" to the frame with cheesy galvanized bands.

My question is. . .how do I go about replacing these bunks, and their crappy mounting system? I could simply replicate what is already there with better metal and hardware, and I guess it will work. . .I've looked at aftermarket bunk brackets, and most of them bolt to cross-braces. This trailer doesn't really have drillable cross-braces.

Would it be acceptable, for a boat this size, to simply bolt the bunk boards to the frame, like they did at the factory? Or can someone think of a better option?

(I know photos would help, but I'm not at home. . .picture a 2x4 slapped on top of a steel frame and bolted to the sides.)

countersink lag bolts through the top and them carpet them after they are installed. That's the way I went about securing them to my brackets, should do the same for you. If you had enough support from the trailer, you might be able to get away with using composite plastic decking for your bunks and avoid having to carpet them. You'd essentially have long plastic runners for the boat. This is assuming the original bunk wood was laying flat on the trailer.
