replacing bunks

well i need to replace the bunks on my trailer.
is there special carpet that go on them or can I use indoor/outdoor carpet from home depot to cover?

do you glue the carpet or just staple it?

Ya, indoor/outdoor is fine and I would cover over the old carpet, it helps to pad the high spots and lasts alot longer before it wears through.

hard to use staples if leaving old carpet, the best i found is galvanized roofing nails.

Indoor/outdoor carpet has been working for me for many years. Pressure-treated wood is solid as the day it went on the trailer. Carpet starting to show wear through, but stables holding strong. I used the corrosion resistant staples (not ss) called Monel. I saw at Sears yesterday, some 9/16" staples, but were too wide for my T50 stapler. The should shoot through 2 layers of carpet though if you don't opt for galv. tacks, roofing nails, etc..

Thanks Ill try the roofing nails because I dont have a stapler. Im not using the old carpet though. I just replaced the bunk wood with new 2x6x16 treated but did not put the carpet on yet. Will it hurt to lanch the toon with no carpt? It is a fiberglass pontoon.

I had to jack up the toon oneside at a time using 4x4 post and a floor jack on the front and back corners. worked well:redface:
I do not have the carpet yet.

The old buks were rotted out I was able to bend the 2x6 in half. So they had to be replaced ASAP.(reson for no cARPET)

It shoul dnto hurt to launch a few times with no carpet. I would not do it for long. My guess is you need to launch it once to get the bunks recarpeted. Not an issue...

They sell black polyethylene/plastic bunk covers at places like Cabela's, Boater's World, etc. that would provide a smooth, sliding surface to possibly make launching easier. My bunks still have the marine carpet on them but it's beginning to wear and may consider these slick plastic bunk covers that slip right over the bunk boards and attach with staples/nails/tacks. Just an idea as an option for you. Good Luck!

I will take a look at other types of bunk cover. I just think that the carpet will be the most cost effective.

I lanched today with just wood.

Used fire hose, 2.5 inch or larger works for a inexpensive and rugged bunk. Of course this won't do if there's a wife involved and she wants something pretty. Our local fire department tests hose annually and the sections that don't pass inspections are available for free. It is usually double jacketed and the boards will rot long before the hose gives up. Just a thought.
