Ok I have questions for the many peeps that have already done it. First some basics; the boat is a 2000 Lund Alaskan and I have 3 of the 4 carpeted wood pieces out of the boat (the bench seats/storage along port and starboard) and the carpet and most of the adhesive has been removed. The wood is very wet but not rotted. I know MOST of you wouldn't put carpet back in but it was free. Now the questions;
1. Can I reuse the original wood if/when it dries enough for a new adhesive to stick to it?
2. MUST I use marine grade ply if I can't reuse the original wood or can I use a hardwood ply and treat it with a wood sealer? I thought of that plastic/wood deck material but the max width of the wood on the boat is 13 inches.
3. The outdoor carpet adhesive I found is "HENRY 663". Will this be ok?
4. Is there something other than rivets I can use to reattach the hatches after I replace the carpet? I only need 2 dozen rivets and don't want to buy the tool and 1000 rivets if I don't have too. The holes are 3/16" diameter and I need to go through 1/4". I think most bolt heads would prevent the hatch from closing completely.
If the original pieces of wood had been rounded on the corners none of the carpet would need replacing. It has only become worn and cut where it was stretched and applied over a sharp edge. I WILL be using a router to fix that issue. Right now I'm only looking at about $17 for the adhesive, I'd like to skip $100 for marine ply and another $100 for a rivet gun and rivets if possible, but it won't break the bank if everyone says thats the way to go.
