I have a 1976 Galaxy tri-hull as my first boat. It's in somewhat rough shape cosmetically, and I want to do a little to fix it up. Would there be a big difference between replacing the carpet with indoor/outdoor carpet vs. actual Marine carpet? Just wondering what others have done and what the differences are between the two types.

Thanks to all !!

Re: Replacing Carpet

Salt water or fresh -

I would use the cheap stuff and plan on changing it often

I would also do a little research and find the difference between marine and indoor/outdoor, aside from cost - my outdoor carpet in my yard lasts about 2 years, but has nowhere near the amount of water exposure a boat does

Re: Replacing Carpet

I used indoor/outdoor in a bowrider I had...sold after a year so cant testify to the longevity but it seemed to be holding up pretty well...Although I kept it covered when not in use so it really rarely saw heavy water....it sure was cheap. The boat was new to me so my philosophy at the time was not to spend too much money on it until I was sure it was mechanically sound...

Thanks Guys, I was thnking that the cheap route would probably be the way to go. Like you all, I don't want to sink a ton of cash into it until I'm sure its mechanically sound and going to last a few years, and I hope to upgrade to a little larger one in a few years anyway.

Re: Replacing Carpet

Good boat carpet has a higher weave count than indoor outdoor carpet. Thats why it cost more. However allot of people replace there boat carpet with the indoor outdoor carpet from Lowe's etc. Including myself. I did mine 6 years ago and its held up fine but is starting to show some thinning. Read some of the threads in boat restoration form for some good advice on it.

get rid of the carpet and replace with vinyl. You'll never miss it.
