1981 Evinrude 35hp outboard...need to replace clutch dog and possible foward gear. I have never been in a lower unit. How easy or difficult is this? Any special tools involved? I have a manual and it looks fairly easy. I need to save some dough...nearest dealer says it's about a $500-700 job. Parts/ mostly labor. Also my front motor mount needs replacing...difficult? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: replacing clutch dogs....

Not difficult if you can spin a wrench, keep a cool head, and remember what goes where--and have a manual to make it easier. You may be able to find gears used; you will see how the dog gets worn from slow shifts. Pay attention to how the shift linkage goes for re-assembly. Some dogs/gears can be machined down alittle for a new edge on them. I recommend Permatex Aviation sealer or similiar for water tight seals. Some motors require a special tool to get the prop shaft out, and larger motors tend to like to have gears set up to tolerances.

Motor mounts can be a pain to get to sometimes but are easy otherwise. You will save $$ as those dealers intend to make a living doing that stuff.
