Can anyone give me some advice on the best way to remove an old motor decal to replace it and refinish the cowl - repaint? Its for a 1992 9.9hp Mercury. Thanks in advance.

Most people have success by heating the decals with a hair dryer to soften them up, then they peel off easier. You can get new decals and paint from your Mercury dealer. Otherwise, any exterior rust inhibitor paint will propably work. Do a seach, there are a few detailed posts on painting motors.

Hello all,
We recently rebuilt an older OMC that we stripped the decal off and took it to a local Graphics Co. who basically copied and improved the look to our needs. It cost $155.00 INSTALLED and looks better than the original.
Use good primer and Auto paint with hardener to get the best results, rattle cans work ok but the paint will not harden up and last like the mix and spray kind.
They sell little air sprayers that are re-useable and self-propelled w/compr. air.
Mercs usually have a Lacqer paint so test first!
Tim M
