Going to remove the foam on the inside of the cowl as it is deteriorating. Any suggestions on what to replace it with?

Another option is a sleeping bag mat used for comfort and insulation under a sleeping bag.High density foam applied with contact cement.

For a number of years OMC quit using foam in their cowls for the very reason you see in yours. Scrape/sand the loose particles out and run it that way.

I completely removed mine I sand it clean and paint it. You don't want any loose dust or particles airborne under the cowling, it ends up in the carbs and clogs your jet ...

I removed mine too, and left it out. I did find that a can of spray zip strip makes fast work of removing the stuck foam and glue.

i was thinking of the sort of sound deadening you can put in cars, if thats adequate. for those of you that left it bare, is there a noticable increase in noise or is it marginal?

Like the others have suggested, remove the old foam and leave it clean. Did the same thing to mine, and I cannot tell any difference in the sound level.

I also removed mine and can't tell a difference in noise. I also have had bad experience with the car sound deadening stuff in the past - the kind I used turned to a gummy mess in the heat and didn't seem to help with noise either.

I did not notice any difference in sound also. There were questions of the heat transferring to the decals sent to me a while back. My Decals is still in awesome shape with no peeling to report.
