I have a cracked drive oil reservoir line between the transom and drive and I would like to know if there are any tricks to replacing this without having to remove the gimbal housing and bellows. the bellows and everything else appears to be in decent shape but the line is cracked and causing water to seep into the gear oil in the case and reservoir. Does anyone know if this is possible?

You can replace the line. One problem you might have is if you have the plastic through gimbal housing fitting. The hose barb end usually breaks off the fitting and you have to replace it too. Yes, it's possible, the fitting breaks about every time the bellhousing is removed.

Not to drift this off topic, but why dont they make those fittings out of brass or whatever, instead of cheap plastic?

You pros must cringe every time a customer brings in one of those broken off, explaining why its going to run $350 to replace the $8 part because you have to remove half the exhaust to get to it....??

Outdrive reservoir installation.....

Outdrive reservoir installation.....

OUTDRIVE RESERVOIR INSTALLATION....
the installation instructions that came with the SEI Outdrive-oil reservoir are pretty skimpy.

it will probably seem more clear when I have the outdrive removed.
I am thoughtful on future outdrive removals when this thing is connected.

Since the oil is not highly pressurized, I suspect the brass fitting into a drilled throughway would be sufficient.

I am expecting a throughway in the outdrive, but am not certain which models have it predrilled.

Something to figure out as I go along.

SEI instructions that I don't like:
3. ABOVE THE WATERLINE AND HIGHER THAN TH E TOP OF THE OUTDRIVE A 5/8 HOLE WILLL NEED TO BE DRILLED AT A 45 TO 60 DEGREE ANGLE FOR THE 4AN LINE TO FIT THROUGH THE HULL. THE ANGLE IS NEED SO NOT TO PUT A CRIMP ON THE LINE AFTER INSTALLING THE COVER.

so, i'll inspect. I am NOT enthusiastic about drilling the hull ! I HOPE the outdrive has a predrilled hole via the gimble OR i can somehow use the sensor throughways.

Any ideas ?

You need to start a new thread of your own stopher, not hijack someone elses thread.

Until about 1998 they were made of brass. In 1998 they changed from a screw on fitting (on the end of the hose that goes to the oil bottle on the engine) to a quick-connect, and plastic is a)cheaper, and b)ensures us pros have lots of income in the future and Merc have spare part sales. :D (I'm not really cynical)....

I agree with Chris, plus those cheap plastic fittings fit right in with the sorry engine mounted raw water pump and the drain systems designed to crack blocks.

BCox777, did you ever solve this issue? I have the exact same setup and problem as you do. I am going to take it in soon and they want to pull the whole unit. I would prefer to just replace the cracked hose. What did you end up having to do. Thanks!

Read the Help Tip above and you will see why we ask that old threads stay dormant. BCox777 hasn't been here in over two years, so he won't be answering your question.

If you start a new thread our members will tell how to do the job yourself.

This thread has been hijacked enough times. Closed.
