replacing engine advice

I have a 2003 trophy 2359(~24ft 6000lb) with a 5.0L Mercruiser and alpha genII that is almost exclussively used in saltwater. I have been underpowered since the day I bought the boat. The engine now has no compression on a couple cylinders so instead of putting money into repairing a 9 year old underpowered engine, I plan on upgrading the engine. I wanted to go with a 2012 5.7 MPI Mercruiser but can find no one that can provide a full fresh water cooling option, only a half system. The engine compartment has very little space to work in so want to avoid having to replace manifolds in 5-10 years. I am now looking at the indmar 5.7 MPI which comes with a full fresh water cooling system(including dryjoints). I want an injected engine for the convenience, horsepower and improved fuel economy. My alpha genII is geared at 1.62, I am also plannig on replacing the upper to 1.47(thinking SEI). The Bravo conversion would be nice but would like to keep a few dollars in the bank.

Looking for advice on my plan. Also contemplating doing the work myself but cannot figure out how I would get the engine out and back in. I do my own maintenance work on the drive so that piece should not be too hard(I assume a SEI upper and a Merc lower work together) . But how challenging is it to line up the engine correctly (assuming I can find a hoist)? Is there a lot more to it than getting it lined up and bolted down? Thanks for the help.

Pulling and replacing the engine is no big job - assuming you have access. When you pull it, be sure to leave the front mounts on the engine and simply remove the lag bolts holding them onto the stringers. It will need to be aligned when you reinstall it. Do a search and you will see a lot of posts with help on aligning. (It may even be a sticky in the DIY section at the top of the page).

Re: replacing engine advice

Thanks for the link for alignment advice, I was told the engine should bolt down exactly where mine sits now. My mechanic called about getting the 5.7 MPI merc with closed cooling OEM but was told it was not an option. I called Michigan Motorz and was told the same thing. He said he could get me a 2009 but not 2010 or newer. I then called a couple third party fresh water cooling outfits(San Juan and Orca-marine) and was told they did not have kits they would certify for the 2012 MPI Merc and that I was stuck with half cooling options. I don't know anything about Indmar but was told it is the same engine with a couple different accessories, biggest one being it runs a different computer that is programmed to work with the a closed cooling system.

If you plan on doing a conversion using a engine with new motor mounts first take a measurement of the old engine from the centerline of the crankshaft to the bottom of the boat.Setting the new at the same height will keep you in the ballpark for adjusting the alignment.

Anybody have any concerns with using a SEI upper with a Merc lower unit?

Re: replacing engine advice

I have one more question. I called SEI to order the new upper unit with a 1.47 gear ratio. The SEI tech guy told me my existing 1.62 would would be fine and if the RPM's went high to buy a higher pitch prop. I see all the alpha drives paired with the 300hp Merc's come with the 1.47 gear ratio. I have heard mixed messages from two different mechanics. Anybody have personal experience using the 1.62 with a 300hp at or near sea level? Assuming I can get a prop that gets me in the right RPM range is there any problem with using the 1.62. Saving money is always nice and I was surprised the SEI guy passed on a sale.

What prop are you spinning now?

You could conceivably wait and just put on a higher pitch prop for now and then decide on the different geared drive later depending on what kind of RPMs you see.

Since you are putting a lot more hp on the alpha, I would be taking it easy with the throttle anyway to make the drive last longer. Maybe later on you will decide to actually bite a bigger bullet and get a Bravo 3. Personally, I would never have another drive without dual props.

Because they are trained to discourage sales to folks who have admitted that they are going to power with more than 300 ponies.

For future reference...tell them you are installing a 290hp engine. That will keep 'em happy enough to sell you a drive.
