Replacing floatation pics

Last week I asked if using pool noodles for floatation was a good idea. The majority of replies suggested that I could so I decided to use a combination of noodles and pink sheet insulation. So far I have 24 noodles and 3 sheets of the pink stuff layed in. Here are so pics of my progress. Are there any other suggestions before I replace the deck?

Did you make plenty of holes and valleys for adequate drainage?...I may place drain holes (every foot) on stringers (resined over of course) and tack or groove the foam sheets to leave a gap for drainage from deck areas to bilge channel..And lastly, make sure HULL botom is sanded and repainted..I have white flakes of paint that can clog PVC drains as well.....ALOT better than manufacturer did.

Lookin good... it kind of has an Easter-y sort if color scheme going on! I saw that convo about the noodles the other day, and I am sure that someone has thought it through, but are you sure those don't react with gasoline? No one ever expects to have any sort of leak or fumes, but things can go wrong, and I know that some foams have a pretty intense reaction to gas...

Gorgeous. Simply GORGEOUS :D

One suggestion....SEAL ALL THAT WOOD!!!! Or better yet, get rid of it. You don't need to reinforce the stringers and if you want cross pieces like you've added....rivet in some aluminum angle. That's what I did here and added some flashing to keep the noodles out of my bilge.

I really don't want any wood under the deck of my aluminum boat.

I ran the wood under the stringers so I could secure the deck with screws. Otherwise I will have to use rivots which are a pain.

I ran deck screws right into the stringers on my last boat and my current project. Worked fine. I also added some construction adhesive for good measure.

i agree with EZ less wood less weight, less rot, that's what alum is good for...!!! use stringers, stainless steel screws and some 4200 or other adhesive

I also agree with simply attaching directly to the aluminum stringers. Just factor in the thickness of the plywood and then I added about 3/8 of an inch to make sure that the grip was secure, but not going through the hull on the other side!

Awesome man, i am using exactly the same thing, the 2x8x2" pink foam board from the depot and noodles. Alot of people are against this but i plan on filling in some of the gaps with spray can foam just to keep everything tight, i will drill some holes in the deck and do this very last. I had also considered laying down plastic, almost wrapping all foam in a bag, so i could never get wet even if there was water in bilge.

Im still kicking that idea around..

I am also considering the use of bags to eliminate the water soaking issue in case a leak does happen, the foam would stay dry...I suggest some small hefty bags may do the trick but you would have to find a way to seal them up and a way to insert the foam and yet pliable enough to expand and still fill the small crevices...sound like a challenge:rolleyes:
