Friend has 40hp 1974 Evenrude. He has replaced head gasket. When re-placing head on engine what clearance should there be with a feeler gauge? Does this make sense?

Re: Replacing head gasket

hello
after replacement? after there should be zero clearance :) :)
I think you are refering to how to check the head. after cleaning the head lay a staight edge acrossed the surface in both a vertical and diagonal pattern max clearence at any one spot is .004". when in doubt surface the head. that small head can be done on a floor mounted belt sander or 120 grit of a plate of glass. after surfacing and cleaning the head you need to find the cause of the failure. most head gaskets dont just fail. if you dont find/fix the cause it will fail again.
good luck and keep us posted
