Hey Everyone,
I have a 99 Four Winns Horizon with a 5.0Gi and SX drive. There is no functional accessory circuit at the key either. I'm looking to replace the keyed ignition switch with a toggle for ignition/run and a push button for the starter crank. The reasons I want to eliminate the switch are: 1-I have a 2 year old first mate that loves to grab at the key. 2-theft is not a concern where my boat lives. 3-I've just never been impressed with these ignition switches on boats and they are typically the first suspect when there are running or electrical gripes and frankly I find the key annoying.
The switch and button I'd wire in will be quality components. I'm fully capable of doing a sanitary job on the install and wiring but I need some more experienced boaters to chime in and let me know why this might be a bad (or good) idea. Thanks in advance.

Just thinking ahead to the next person, that may affect the resale value quite a bit, just imagining having to explain that mod to them

Also, seems a 2 year old may find your new switch arrangement even more attractive. If he gets away from you he can do some major switch manipulations in a very short time.

Hey it's your boat you are free to change/modify just about what ever you want.............This may sound a bit harsh but the helm is not a play area set boundaries and issue #1 becomes a mute point.

Kinda reminds me of when me and my cousin where new fathers we had toddlers very close in age, we would go to their house and there was nothing on the coffee table, end tables or any where else their toddler could reach..their fix was to put everything out of reach, they thought it was mean to set boundaries..................
.just sayin

Check in with your local car alarm shop. There are many RFID type of start disable safe guards off the shelf that you could tie tie to ur trunks. If u aren't in the captions chair no start.

I had problems with the key on the flybridge starting the motor on it's won when it got wet. So I wired my key ignition switch up there for power at the first click. The second position (starter engage) now works the horn. The horn button is now the starter, but only with the key on. If I have a wetness problem at the switch now, the horn blows but the starter doesn't engage. The day I start worrying about resale is the day I'll stop enjoying my boat.
