I'm about to replace the impeller in my 70 evinrude and have done this on other smaller engines.I don't see where to disconnect the shift shaft. It appears to be inside the engine cowling behind the carbs.Looks like it's real fun to get at?Any advice?

You're looking at it. You need tiny hands to get it apart, and even smaller ones to get it back together, lol. Enjoy the cussing and swearing, I know my wife enjoyed the show when i tried getting my giant hands in to do mine. Make sure when you have it apart you dont adjust the shaft, since the tolerances on it are small to get it back together. And apply some marine grease to to the drive shaft splines as well.A coat of oil on the impeller will ease wear for initial start up. A manual would help alot if you dont already have one, tips with pics. If you need help with the actual changing of the impeller, and you dont have a manual, someone will be able to talk you through it. Might wanna take the garden hose or compressed air to the water line as well while you have the lower unit dropped.Good luck

Comes apart pretty good, takes a little wrestling with it a little to get it back together.

Two bolts under the anti-ventilation plate, one hidden by the torque tab (scribe an index mark so you can put it back like it was).

Manual calls for "OMC adhesive type M" or something like that on the joint between exhaust housing and lower unit - I use permatex #2 works just fine.

The OEM full pump kit includes a little packet of grease..."they say" you should use only that on your drive shaft splines - I don't know what happens if you use anything else, I'm too scared of "them"...........

Have a spray can of carb cleaner or deep creep or something on hand - might as well clean the carbon out of your exhaust tube while you got it opened up.

I believe your engine has a release pin, located behind the cable mount, cant think of the name of the pin,but with a pliers and a yank it should come out, then push on the shift rod assy so it slides over toward portside of the eng, removing the cable makes it easier, there is a pin that get disloged when you push the rod over and then twist,I think you will understand better if you locate the pin to remove,it basically did away with an older system that required removing a threaded pin

I have the Clymer's Manual for that year and model if you want me to send you a copy of the pages. Let me know in a PM if you want it.

I did purchase a Clymer's manual.Took boat out today 8-9,everything Ok on cooling issue.Last trip was on Snake River (Nampa,Id) pretty mossy and lots of algae.I think pee hole just got plugged up.Thanks for all the advice.I did have some trouble initially today--would'nt rev over 2200 rpm, no warning horn. It would run slightly better by repeatedly hitting the choke.I suspect a plugged main jet in one of the carbs. After running the kicker for awhile the 70 ran fine the rest of the day, go figure.
