I'm about to replace the impeller in my Volvo Penta 5.0 GL. Seems to be a relatively simple DIY project. However, after buying the part and reading the instructions that came with it, I have a little more concern.

This may just be typical warning type info. that comes with most products, but I wanted to be sure I don't screw something up. It's talking about the potential for getting air trapped in the system which will prevent it from operating correctly and could damage the pump/cooling system.

First question....how typical is it for that to happen, and is there an easy way to help avoid it?

Second question....it says to be sure that the pump is drawing water within 30 seconds of starting it back up or to shut it off right away if it isn't. How can you tell if it's drawing water?

Re: Replacing impeller questions

I have never had a prob with trapped air when replacing impeller and risers should stay cool to the touch.

If the engine hasn't had water through it yet this year, it may take a little longer. If it has water in it, it should take a few seconds before you see water blowing out with the exhaust.

Disconnect the hose going to the t-stat and turn the engine over you should see water come shooting out of this hose if the impeller is working. be sure not to use ear muffs as this forces water through, drop the drive into a large rubber maid tub and let it draw the water on its own.

Re: Replacing impeller questions

Whenever I change engine impellers, I put about a tablespoon of dishwashing soap in the volute around the rubber impeller. This allows the impeller to spin for 10-20 seconds without creating any heat, which can destroy a new impeller.
