Replacing impeller w/o lower unit drop

A guy told me that you can replace the alpha I impeller by simply removing the side water intake screen, on the lower unit. However everything I read elsewhere seems to negate that. Any idea what he was talking about. Apparently he also has an alpha and has done it before.

The reason I want to replace it is my motor runs progressively hot until well after planing off. Also it runs hot if you turn left and it cools down when turning left. Any ideas? thanks a lot.

There is no way to replace the impeller without dropping the lower unit on an alpha drive.

haha yea figured, that. In his defense though, perhaps he has a bravo and doesn't realize it. Of course if he doesn't realize it he probably shouldn't be working on his own boat either

Since a Bravo doesn't have a water pump in the drive, that wouldn't work.
He just doesn't have a clue. BS thru and thru.

Maybe the guy has an Alpha I OMC Cobra Stringer Outboard.
