Re: Replacing intake screen on lower unit.

Welcome!

It really depends on how you feel about it and where you boat. We take them out of race motors but we're always in deep water (no sand, grass etc). On a flats boat there is always grass getting caught in the screen but it's easier to clean out the screen than inside the cooling system. It'll stop small shells & other debris.

As for replacing it, once you have the water pump off it's real easy. No big deal.

When is the last time you serviced the water pump? If not recently, perhaps you should do both at the same time.

I feel that the screen plays some part in getting the water into the inlet instead of just flowing right past it at high speeds.

Re: Replacing intake screen on lower unit.

Thanks for the replys. I pulled the lower unit and it does not look like a big deal to replace. I might have to break the old plastic one to get it out. Plan on new impeller etc. while it is off. Just for the record it is a 1986! Thanks again.
