I am replacing my lower shift cable on a 1985 omc stringer 800 outdrive, just another part of my ongoing project. I noticed it calls for an OMC special tool # 909881 to thread onto the pinion shaft in the shift cable housing. Anyone know if I can buy one of those somewhere? or does someone have a suggestion as to how I can make something that will work?

Re: replacing lower shift cable OMC stringer 800

has anyone ever replaced the lower cable on this outdrive?? I am really at a standstill getting the pinion shaft out of the cable housing. I have rigged up a "tool" to pull it out, but it is not budging. Any tips on this on how to get it out would be VERY helpful.

Thanks in advance

Might be a bit old or late to reply now, but I welded two nuts together, and then welded the nuts on a larger long bolt. Before they were welded to the bolt, I spun on a larger nut and washer, so that when the small nuts on the end were spun on the pinion shaft, I could use the large nut and washer to go in the opposite direction and act as a puller, it worked fine. If that didn't work, I was going to use a large peice of rod and drill/tap it for the thread and slide hammer it out, but the first method worked fine for me, only a little resistance as first, but it came out easy. Use lube.
