Have a 1987 35hp merc. with shot upper motor mounts, which causes the motor to rattle very badly. I also have a leak in which water shoots out right under the powerhead. Is this the crankshaft seal? Does anybody know how difficult this would be for a somewhat handy person with a manual to do? And can i kill 2 birds with one stone and knock them both out at the same time? thanks in advance

Re: Replacing motor Mounts

In most cases, the powerhead needs to come off. It's not too difficult. A camera and a manual are a big help. You will also be able to replace the gaskets at the same time.

When you say motor mounts I assume you are refering to the round rubber plug type mounts. If so these can be difficult to remove. You will need circlip pliers.Usually you have to tear the mounts up to get them out. You dont have to pull the power head to do this. The water leak is probably a bad gasket under the power head. Got to pull the head to do that one.
