An friend of mine just bought a 1993 E350 Van with a cherry picker setup installed on it. He got it cheap because it needs a new oil pan. The van has a 5.8liter v8. It looks like to replace the pan, you need to undo the exhaust, remove all the pan bolts, and somehow lift the engine up a couple inches to get the pan to clear the front crossmember.

Anyone ever do one?
Where did you lift the engine from?
Anything to watch out for?

You'll need to Remove the Front end of the truck to pull the engine,........
Radiator support,.. Grill,... Everything that Bolts in,........
Then,.. With a little Luck,..... You slide the end of a portable cherry picker into the engine well,+ attach the engine to it,+ Lift, Wiggle,+ Cuss til it's Out......
You'll gain Lots of Clearance by pulling the Intake,+ the Exhaust Manifolds.........
For attaching the motor to the Lift,...... Use some of the Manifold bolts that you just took Out.........

You can jack it up from the harmonic balancer in the front of the motor. Be certain to place a block of wood between whatever you apply pressure to. You can also lift it at the bellhousing again use a 2 x 4 to spread the load and not damage the metal.

I have done the oil pans on full size ford bronco's and it is not to hard. I always replace the oil pump when I am in there with a high volume pump just for good measure. An additional option is to secure a chain to the motor and use a cherry picker (engine hoist or similar). I have found that it pays to have multiple lift points in case you need to move one or remove one to install the pan.

You really are going to be working with tight clearances but it can be done.

I was thinking about jacking on the harmonic balancer, but I thought it was a bad idea. If I can jack the engine up by that, I'll be set. Otherwise, it looks like I can use my engine hoist to either lift up on the engine from the front, or from inside the van at the back of the engine.

Bondo: I was hoping to do this with the engine installed. Have you found that to be impossible?

While Nothing is Impossible,..........

I've found that there Just Isn't enough Clearence to do what your asking in a Ford Van.......
The Oil Pan isn't just going to Come Off,.......
You Need to remove the Oil Pump,+ Drop it into the Pan,..... Then TRY to remove the Pan.....
It's Still got to Clear all the Engines Parts,+ the front suspension members........

And, Of Course,.... It's Even Tuffer to Reinstall it without the New Gasket getting Boogered Up............

If it Wasn't a Real Pain to Fix it,....... Your Bud wouldn't have bought it CHEAP.........

Thats what I told him. I'll lend him my engine hoist, but I'm not getting involed in that mess. I've got my own fleet of cars that keep me occupied

-Aaron
