Replacing old steering

I recently purchased a 1973 18' skiff and need to replace the steering. The engine is a 2004 mercruiser 4.3 MPI paired with a alpha one drive. The old steering is an old ridgeguide rack and pinion at the helm and was wondering if I could replace that with something more up to date and if possible use the same steering cable. Another reason I'm replacing the steering is because the old rack and pinion is to big and it's getting the way of me re working the helm. Another question does it matter if the rack and pinion guide behind the steering wheel is mounted vertical or can be horizontal.

I would look to replace all or nothing. If it is original it is over 40 years old.

I don't know if the old cable would fit a new rack, but I doubt it. It would not fit a new rotary helm.

Hopefully others will chime in.

Welcome to iboats. :welcome:

If you have the room you could replace the entire system (highly recommended) with a rotary system. If you go with another rack and pinion it does not make a difference which orientation the rack is in as long as it is not binding. The rotary systems are quite small and efficient.

It's always advisable to replace the helm and cable at the same time. If your stern drive has power assist steering, a standard single cable rotary system like Teleflex's Safe-T QC system will work. If you have "armstrong" steering, step up to an NFB (no feedback) rotary system for better control.
