On MerCstuff they show method A to replace only the inner gimbal bearing and leave the carrier. On inspection of my 01 5.7-B2 every thing looks good inside the bellows except the bearing is a little rough when I spin it by hand. Is this a viable option? My manual says there are a matched set. Thanks

Don't know about a match set thing, but the inner gimbal should fit real tight in side of the carrier to keep it from spinning. The first time you try to align the engine with a new gimbal they need to be taped around a bit to get them centered. That is how tight the inner needs to be. If you can insert the inner gimbal with a lot of effort and it takes similar effort to get it setup for alignment then your probably ok. This helps with the work but ask your self is it worth the probability it might not be tight enough, if it is at all questionable?

I too doubt the "matched set" propaganda by Mercruiser. (I can just see some technician with a set of calipers and micrometers matching each bearing with its race ;) ). Having said that... it is not much more difficult to simply pull the old bearing as a complete unit and install the new. The savings of a little time and effort is not worth the possibility that something could go wrong with the install the other way. Plus, the chances are good the original bearing has the grooves facing forward anyway, which makes the "turn and remove" method impossible.

The bearing and carrier are matched during manufacture. Besides unless the two "notches" in the carrier face aft you can't remove the bearing without removing the whole unit anyway. Best to just remove and replace the whole thing as a unit.

Went to the boat and the two notches face forward. Thanks for your time.

I would just do it right. Pull the whole thing and put a new one in.
