I have a 88 Bluefin Sportsman 1950. I'm replacing the floor in the front of boat. I pulled up everything. There is carpet under the original plywood. Can anyone tell me why there would be carpet there

Pix would help, but unless that hull was configured multuple ways by BlueFin at the factory, and 1 of them was more open then the way your 1950 was setup, then I doubt that theres carpet under original plywood.

Have you owned the boat since new? If not, I'd bet someone added new plywood over old.

Many times a prior owner will just lay plywood down over the old rotten floor, carpet and all. This leaves a nice surprise for a future owner that thinks there's just a small soft spot in the floor, only to find out the the entire hull needs to be gutted and rebuilt.

Your bluefin is an aluminum boat. Pull the rotten floor out and replace it

That is what the plan is but I won't be able to do it this year. The back of the boat is ok for now. It looks like maybe it was done twice. It just seemed odd to see carpet under 2 layer of floor

Because the previous owner was too lazy to fix it right

Yeah. That's the way it looks. He built a casting deck over the top of the storage area and the livewell. I don't know why people do that. If he would have don't it right he could have got a lot more for the boat.

I have to agree with previous comments. The previous owner was too lazy to actually remove the old rotted floorings and carpet and do the job the right and safe way. And so the boat has a lot more weight with all those rotted floors and carpet then it really needs. So first, tear everything out to the bare hull and complete the job the correct way and enjoy your boat for as long as you want it. JMHO!
