Replacing power pack. Will I blow it with any existing problems?

I don't want to kill it. (new power pack) What would kill it? Seems my stator is good and timerbase seems good. Will have a new recitifier at time of install. blk/yel kill circuit is fine, no shorts or power on it. How can I tell if I have a "bad spot" in the stator. My mechanic said maybe there could be even if it test good.

Any thoughts?

I am measuring 0.01 - 0.04 ohms to ground testing from each orange wire on the packer pack to ground. Shouldn't I see some resistance from the coil there?

There's really only two things that can toast a power pack.

#1 Bad ground. Make sure you clean your grounds. Dress the connections on the block with a file.

#2 A rectifier that dies just so . . . If you toast one side of the diodes on the rectifier you'll get half-wave rectification. Essentially about 10v or so dc w/ ac current on top - anywhere from 10-30v depending on rpm. A good high rev will start popping everything electrical in sight. A pretty rare failure mode though.

Take care of #1. You've got a new rectifier, so #2 is pretty darned unlikely.

I am getting a new rectifier because my old one was shot. I had direct short on the yellow wire and the red wire was burn't all they way to the bakelite from the terminal.

Did you see my readings on the power pack? Do you thin it is my problem?

Honestly, I haven't had much cause to muddle with any power packs except one. And, it was obvious enough that I knew it to be the problem. I think those that are helping you already are more familiar with those systems and are going to be better guides.

I'm remaining a curious spectator at this point.

I will post my results when I change it. I beleive everyone is wondering what will happen on this one. Time to buy stock in power packs. If this works everyone will porbably start changing them.

Thanks everyone for your advice! Couldn't have done these test without you!

Except Iwombat who was out traversing around fishin' all weekend. At least he doesn't rub it in. J/K... Iwombat, you gave me the courge to rebuild my carbs and it worked beautifully for me!!!!!

Thanks again, I'll keep ya posted!
