There are several threads on replacing the bearing and seal for the raw water pump but I thought I would make my own. Most of it will be pictures...
I believe the seal has leaked since my family purchased the boat in 2008.. The boat is a 2006 Four Winns with a 4.3 GL-G. Never really thought much of it till last summer when it started slinging water all around the engine. Instead of ordering a rebuilt pump or a new pump from volvo, I elected to just rebuild ours. The kit came from marineparts_pumps on ebay. I will say that I chose not to use the impeller that came in the kit since it didnt fit on the splines well at all. I can turn the impeller a good bit before the splines catch. I decided to just keep it as a spare and reuse the old volvo impeller since it still looks fine. I always remove it in the fall. So basically I paid $60 for a bearing and a seal... Next time Ill order the parts myself since the part numbers on the old seal and bearing pop right up when searching on google. I did use a stainless bearing even though the old bearing seemed fine after having a leaky seal for years.
Either way, on to the pics.
A 2 jaw puller made quick work of the bearing housing:
Then I cut a small piece of aluminum that I had to slide into the bearing. Using a socket I pressed the old bearing out in a vice. Ive seen photos where someone used two allen wrenches. They insert the short ends back to back in the bearing and use those to press it out. I had not seen that before I did this but someone else may be able to use that method.
Used the old bearing to press the new bearing in... Vice made quick work of that.
Numbers off of the old seal and bearing:
GACO ANGUS DPSM 16287
SKF 6006-2RS1
The kit came with some loctite that I placed around the bearing before pressing the new bearing in and also around the shaft when I pressed the bearing housing back on. I placed the pulley and bearing housing in the vice to press the housing back on the pulley. Used thick shop towels so as to not damage the brass and pulley along with a large socket that went over the pulley shaft...
So far so leaks! Ive ran it on the water hose for a good bit... We'll see if it makes it through the season! Now to get figure out this belt squeak!
