Replacing rear seals on 1984 60 hp Evinrude

Recently got this motor but am new to Evinrudes. I tried to replace the leaky rear seals without removing prop shaft but had problems getting at them without damaging the casing. I have now taken the lower unit off and want to pull the prop shaft but can't figure out from Seloc if I have to disconnect the drive shaft and transmission rod before trying my home-made slide hammer on the shaft. Don't want to disturb anything beyond absolutely necessary. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I see now that some sources say to remove the screws from the bearing carrier and pull this, apparently avoiding having to pull the shaft. Is this correct?

Yes, remove the bearing carrier to replace the seals. The bearing carrier would have to come out to remove the prop shaft anyways.

Many thanks! I'll give it a shot now
