replacing rub rail

Going to be repainting the entire top of by boat so thought i might as well do it right.

The rubrail in my boat has a rope core and it is sun rotted. Can i replace it with a similar diameter rope or should i replace the entire rubrail? It all ahs to come off for the paint job and i am concerned that i wont be able to lign up all of the screw holes.

Any vendor suggestions on jsut buying new? my boat is a Wellcraft V20 1983. The replacement rails i have been finding are pretty pricy. 150$ and up.

rub rail is expensive, get someone to help you remove the existing, and store it. you may not find the replacement rope type insert, but there are many rubber ones.
