Do not know about special, but I did find out it takes more then your standard home variety machine can deliver in pushing power. Get a small sample piece of the vinyl that you plan on using and try to sew some folded corner on your machine, That should give you your answer.

You talking cockpit or cabin?

Cockpit you can tack, nail or staple into the plywood if its still sound.
Also they sell real good replacement ones you just have to look in the back waitress of the catalog to find them.

Lime, Normaly cushions have cording around the face of the cushion. You may make cording using some nylon string and a strip of vinyl. Using a ciording foot also helps. When you sew this to the cushion vinyl, you will need to sew at least four thicknesses of vinyl. You need a heavy duty machine for this. Also use nylon thread for strength and resistance to rot.

Might consider this place-http://copycatcovers.com
They quoted me $600 for the complete upholstery, front to back.

was that for the gunnels, engine cover and everything, or just the seats? out here, marine vinyl is $10/yard which would cost around $600 alone.all the vinyl to re-do my seats in factory replica pattern and colors was $300 alone. so thats a pretty good deal unless its not marine vinyl. And, theres a special UV thread that should be used to hold up to the sun/outdoors also.

re upholstered my seat cushions in my old bayliner, I bought the fabrick from a outlet it was pretty cheap, use a heavier sewing needle, standard needles will break.
I just got a stitch cutter and marked all the pieces and made cardboard cut-outs and it went really smooth and looked great ! i sewed it a hair tighter than it was and it fit like tight jeans hiding the imperfectiones. youll also need stainless staples or monel and a heavy staple gun ! good luck !!:D
