Replacing Starter Solenoid on 98 Merc 175

I've got the new soleniod (Sierra) and next to the small contacts there is a "1" next to one and an "S" next to the other. The OEM soleniod has no markings that I can tell to distinguish a difference between the two. How does this hookup? The wire from one contact goes to the plug, the other goes to the engine. Which is hooked to the "1" and which is hooked to the "S" on the new solenoid.

Thanks

The big ones go to the big ones and the little ones go to the little ones. It doesn't matter which. The markings are common with other types of solenoids. They use the same mold for this one too. The little ones are the electromagnet that pulls the contact for the big ones. Polarity doesn't matter.

The automotive solenoids that look like outboard solenoids are grounded through the frame. The start wire from the key switch would attach to the S terminal. The 1 is actually I for ignition. On many older cars, that would be a lead to the + side of the coil.

Thanks a lot! That's what I figured but, being an outboard newbee, you have to ask. I will, though, wire the S to the lead going to the plug, which goes to the ignition switch. Just to be sure ;)
