A 1998 Bayliner 16 with rack and pinion steering and a 90HP Force.

Would I have to hoist up the motor to replace the steering cable in the tilt tube? If so, is there a way of doing this at home?

If the replacement job would be done by a Bayliner shop, would you have any wild estimates as to what it might cost here in SW Florida?

Thanks!

Re: Replacing Steering Cable

It all depends. On my boat I have two top clamps and 2 bolts. the steering shaft is a bit off from the hole so I had to at least tilt the motor to the hole to get the shaft out and back in.

I loosened the clamps and both bolts. I took out the bolt closeset to the hole where I needed to raise the shaft. Then I slid a plywood block under that side of the motor. as the motor tilted I was abe to remove the steering shaft.

I also took the liberty after it was back in position to remove both bolts and slather boatlife caulk into the holes to prevent rot.

If I had 4 bolts I would loosen all 4 and carefully remove the 3 closest to the hole and also slide a wedge under the side of the motor where you need it raised.

I hope this helps some.

Re: Replacing Steering Cable

I have a '94 Bayliner 16' Capri with a 120 force. I just pulled out my steering cable last week awaiting a new one to arrive. Whole job took about 20 minutes. I unbolted the 4 bolts that held the cable to the pinion in the helm and unbolted the end in the tilt tube and slide it out.
Don't waste your money paying for it.
