Replacing steering system

I have an older sea nymph fishing machine with racket pinion steering. The cable is rusted and needs to be replaced. I have looked online and found a few different kits available. Does anyone have any info on how hard of a project this is to do yourself?

I know I need an 11' cable. Other than that I'm not sure what to look for when I am looking online. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Replacing steering system

I have a Ranger bass boat and it has two steering cables on it but they are rack and pinion. Once I determined which one was bad it was easy. The first thing I did was to use a hack saw and saw the rack end(close to steering wheel) in half. By doing this I wouldn't have to run the rack through all of the wires and tight spaces. I then taped the new cable onto the old one and then just snaked it through. If you have tight spaces don't skimp on the tape.

My cable was made my Morse and somewhere between $130 and $150 I believe.

Josh, I see you're new to this forum just like I am. I've been reading the replies now for about a year but have only recently written anything. All I can offer is what I've done myself but guys like tashasdaddy are very knowledgeable and won't steer you wrong(no pun intended) on your problem. I used to own a 1970 40hp Johnson(electric shift) during the 70's and 80 and would have given anything to have had a forum like this but not much if any internet at the time.
