I own a 74 sea star tri hull 18ft. I want to replace the carpet because it is a hidious oragne color. The only problem is that the carpet has a rubber backing on it and it is glued down like a mother. I started pulling up just a little bit of it and the rubber backing stayed stuck to the floor in chunks. I was wondering is there anything you can buy to dissolve the adhevsive or could I just lay new carpet over the old?

I'd grind it off.. The new carpet won't look too good with the old stuff behind it...

Get hold of a right angle grinder (10,000 rpm) and attach a 36 grit sanding disk with a backing pad/disk and tear into it... if you don't have a grinder, a drill with a coarse sanding disk might also work... Don't forget your dust mask... Dirty job...

I had a 77 24ft searay with the same crappy looking carpet. We ripped it all out and scraped the remaining backing off.It was a dirty job.We did not use any type of solvent but I was going to try some paint thinner or turpentine. The fiberglass on the floor did not look very thick so we did it the hard way to avoid any possible effects to the floor from the solvents. What a difference the new carpet made.Good luck~!!!! I used a variety of tools, mainly scapers. SBait's grinder idea works well (and fast) but be careful with it, the discs cut quickly.

I started scraping, got po'd and replaced the floor and the rug. Also replaced everything else that needed it. (good winter project). Have fun.

Can you go over it for now or is it all mildewed? Gravity holds my carpet in place so maybe you can just lay some right over it for now until the end of the season...Just a thought.
