I have a 1982 Mercury 150 Outboard. Im replacing the Exhaust plate gaskets. According to the manual it says to add Loctite 271 to the bolt. Do I need to add this? If so where, to the threads or just the head of the bolts? Could I use RED gasket maker/sealer instead?

First the book is wrong as they torque to 180 inch lbs, 30ft lbs will break em off or pull the threads in block!!! You want it run a thread tap in each hole to clean it out, then wash it out with brake cleen.Clean the bolt and add 2 drops of 271 1/4 inch down from tip of threads on bolt. Install and torque to 180 inch or 15 Ft lbs. Do it in a 3 step procees so gaskets can compress fully, 5/10/15 ft lbs
